Historical Significance of Trincomalee
Trincomalee, known as "Gokanna" in ancient times, has a rich history dating back over 2,500 years. This natural deep-water harbor has been a strategically important location throughout history, attracting various civilizations and colonial powers.
The city's history can be traced to the ancient Sinhalese kingdoms, with references in the Mahavamsa, the great chronicle of Sri Lankan history. The Koneswaram Temple, one of the Pancha Ishwarams (five primary Shiva temples) of Sri Lanka, was established here during the reign of King Mahasena in the 3rd century BC.
